Bible Verses for Addiction Recovery
Organized by the moment you're in. If the craving is happening right now, start with the first section and don't read the rest.
Scripture and encouragement — not medical advice or treatment. If you need help finding treatment, SAMHSA's free confidential helpline is 1-800-662-4357, 24/7 (SAMHSA). More resources here.
When the craving is right now
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”Psalm 46:1, WEB
Why this verse: refuge is a place you get inside of, not a feeling you work up.
For this moment: very present means now — not after you've white-knuckled it alone for an hour.
“No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”1 Corinthians 10:13, WEB
Why this verse: two things at once — you are not uniquely broken for wanting it, and there is an exit.
For this moment: the way out is usually a door, a phone, or another person. Ask for it, then take it.
After a relapse
“When I fall, I will arise.…”Micah 7:8, WEB (excerpt)
Why this verse: Micah was writing about a ruined nation, not about addiction — but the shape holds: the fall is assumed, and it isn't the end.
For this moment: the rising isn't a claim about your strength. Read the rest of the verse — it's about who's with you in the dark.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”1 John 1:9, WEB
Why this verse: the promise rests on God being faithful, not on you being convincing.
For this moment: bringing it into the light is the step. It doesn't replace the call to your sponsor or your counselor — do both.
Early days
“It is because of Yahweh's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn't fail. They are new every morning.…”Lamentations 3:22-23, WEB (excerpt)
Why this verse: new every morning means the supply doesn't run down as you use it.
For this moment: tomorrow's mercy isn't reduced by what today cost.
The long haul
“He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.”Isaiah 40:29, WEB
Why this verse: the qualification for receiving strength is not having any.
For this moment: the long middle of recovery is boring and unglamorous and nobody claps. This is for that part.
For the person loving someone in it
“Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” … “For each man will bear his own burden.”Galatians 6:2, 6:5, WEB
Why these verses: they sit three lines apart and sound contradictory. They aren't. One is a crushing weight meant to be shared. The other is a person's own load, which nobody can carry for them.
For this moment: if you're exhausted, you may be carrying both.
